The Art of Death (Quest for Feign Death)

You want to pretend you are dead? What for? You want to play tricks on the vultures… lay down on the ground and make them circle around you thinking they will have a nice snack perhaps? Well it used to be a fun thing to do in my youth at least. Ah well, so feign death you say? In this land we call is Rest of the Dead.

The spell itself is obtained via a quest which is given to you at level 20 by a Necromancer Trainer. Confirmed trainers that give out the quest are the ones in Lomshir, Khal, and Hathor Zhi. If you know of any others please let us know and I will update the guide accordingly.

When you speak to your Trainer you will be given the following Quest Text:

The Art of Death (Group)

“The art of death is one that very few can master. However, learning the skills and rites is the easy part. Before you can even begin to practice this power, you must find one willing to pass on to you its secrets.”

“If you wish to harness death, you must seek out Master Vallerex. A man who lives by his teachings, Master Vallerex resides in Kalendra’s Coven just north of the Upside Defense Garrison in Skrilien Point.”

~ Quest Objectives ~

Seek out Master Vallerex in Kalendra’s Coven, just north of the Upside Defense Garrison in Qalia’s Skirilien Point.

You will need a solid group here of 20ish level characters to succeed with this quest since the Coven is full of Level 19+ 3 dot and 4 dot mobs with a 5 dot boss mob hiding down there somewhere (no need to mess with the boss though for this quest).

CHEESY SPOILER ALERT: Currently you can get invis cast on you or get one of the spiffy little invisibility casting click able crafter created items and simply invis your way down to finish this quest. Recent changes have added roaming see invis mobs in there, avoidable if you are smart abnd lucky, but risky.

The quickest way to get to the Coven is to take the red riftway to Strand of the Ancients then grab a wyvern and fly over the mountains to the north.  You'll be there in a minute or so going that route. If can't go there yet via riftway, head to the Upside Garrison. From there head east. Kalendra’s Coven is located on the NE side of Qalia in the Skrilien Point chunk (location is -21442, 40361, 1590). What you are looking for is a hole in the ground near a rock outcropping at the southern end of the area, not the large cave to the west. The hole / entrance is S-SE of the Pool of Purification

To get to Master Vallerex you will need to go down this hole and enter the dungeon portion of this area. There will be sneaking enemies (aka invisible) quite frequently so proceed with caution. Don’t move up too fast, give your detection skills time to see the sneaky npc’s before rushing in to their waiting arms hehe.

And then there was Map!!
Kalendra's Coven

Head straight down the path and then take the first right turn as you enter the first 4 way intersection / room. After this right turn you will then come to a jail room (needed for another quest so kill the jailor and free a prisoner if you have that quest since you are in the neighborhood). Continue straight through this room and continue down the path. You will go down a flight of stairs and then come to another 4 way intersection.

Straight ahead is Master Vallerex’ Room, to the left is the passage you will need to go down after talking to Master Vallerex (The Hall of Detention that has the non-aggro Failing Pupils inside of it). Go ahead and clear the roamers in this left path and the halls near the intersection now.

Master VallerexDirectly ahead of you is Master Vallerex in a room with numerous invisible mobs lining both sides of the walls to the right and left. When we snooped in there were a couple that aggro’d but I believe those are guarding just inside the doorway. Kill those off and then you can safely walk straight down the MIDDLE of the room… there is a slightly visible guideline / crack that serves as a good guide to make sure you aren’t drifting to the sides so walk the line and you should be safe. Master Vallerex will appear at the far end of the room when you get in range (human monk in red tights hehe).

Talk to Master Vallerex and he will give you the following text / quest:

The Art of Death

Master Vallerex stares at you critically, saying, “Know this, Lifebaene. You are here because you were sent to me, not because I invited you to come. I do not tolerate those who are not completely dedicated to the dark arts. Should you fail me, you will find yourself wishing you had never come to this place”

Complete the Quest and get the update, then Master Vallerex will say the following:

The Art of Death

Master Vallerex taps his fingers together and says, “So you wish to learn how to take on the mien of death? Only the most devout can wear the guise of the death so convincingly as to fool their enemy. To merely emulate is to fail. One must have an intimate understanding of death to succeed.”

Master Vallerex grins evilly, “To embrace death is the easy part. It’s training yourself to return to life that’s tricky. Let me show you how it is done. Bring forth a failing pupil!”

Objectives

• Escort a Failing Pupil to Master Vallerex

Master Vallerex of Kalendra’s Coven wishes to demonstrate the power of feigning death. Go to the Hall of Detention within Kalendra’s Coven and return to Master Vallerex with a Failing Pupil.

Remember the Failing Pupils in the Detention center I had you clear the path to previously right? Good, now go there. As you head out of the room Master Vallerex was in it will be to the right at the intersection. Go into The Hall of Detention and talk to a Failing Pupil. Right clicking the Failing Pupil will not generate any interaction or text. You need to target one of them then press “H” to hail them (unless of course you remapped H to be something else hehe) .

The Failing Pupil will say something about “Ooo ahh Master Vallerex wishes to see me! Lead on” Or some such, I neglected to worry about his one line of text… sue me hehe.

Walk back to Master Vallerex, again walk down the MIDDLE of the room, when you get to Master Vallerex, talk to him and you will get the following text:

The Art of Death

Master Vallerex gazes into the Failing Pupil’s eyes and says, “Excellent… You will do nicely.”

Continue the quest text series and get the following quest text:

The Art of Death

Master Vallerex yells, “Feeding time!”

And then the poor Pupil gets ganked… oops, sucks to be him. Oh yes, Master Vallerex Feigns dead now too, showoff!!

Master Valerex Feigned

Continue the quest text thread and get the following text update:

The Art of Death

Master Vallerex says, “Do you now understand the skill required of you to use this ability effectively? This is not a game, Lifebaene. Heed my words if you wish to truly grow in power.”

Master Vallerex grins, “With that said my senses tell me you were wise to come to me. Hear my words one last time, and you shall understand what it means to be dead.”

Objectives

Speak with Master Vallerex to learn the ability: Rest of the Dead.

Continue the quest text thread one last time and get the following update:

The Art of Death

Master Vallerex nods, “Go now and master this art, Lifebaene. I have no doubts that you will put it to good use.”

Master Vallerex says I have nothing more to teach you Lifebaene,. Be gone.”

You will have automatically learned the Rest of the Dead spell (aka Feign Death). Now Underworld Journey out of there with your party (aka evac) and go flop around happily pretending to be a corpse.

Congratulations!

A special thanks to the groovy bashing crew of Supernaught, Ilyria, Heckler, and Anngy of Shidreth for their help in getting this quest done.

Do the invisible mobs in Master Vallerex room aggro? What continent is Kendra\'s Coven on? What level and difficulty are the mobs in the dungeon?

Still a few levels away from making this journey just trying to get the details. Thanks in advance.
by ikyth 65 weeks ago
the invisible mobs DO agro. Kalendras Coven is located on the NE side of Qalia in the Skrillien Point chunk. The mobs are 18+ 3dots with a 5 dot boss. It's not a hard dungeon to traverse, you just need a solid group.
by dominus 65 weeks ago
Thank you much. That is exactly the information I have been searching for. I do have a solid group of friends that I play with. One more thing that I forgot to ask. As a Goblin, will I be able to get this quest or will I have to do some factioning?
by synister 65 weeks ago
A few things I dod notice about this quest-
1)Kalendra\'s Coven is actually more East than North from the Defense Garrison.
2)Mob\'s were a little higher than suggested (mainly 19-20, 3 and 4 dots.)
3)Once you clear the doorway into Vallerex\'s room, you can go straight up the middle of the room without aggro. (lvl dependant, at 21 no prob.)
4) if you have a solid group, you can then go kill Kalendra (lvl 20- 5 dot), who drops decent light armor. Be aware she is surrounded by several lvl 20- 4 dots, so good crowd management is a must.
5) Was hoping our FD would be an instant cast (it's 2 seconds), but it's still better than nothing!

Also forgot! If you are having problems finding the Coven, there is a quest given out from an NPC on the backside of the Bunker in the Defense Garrison. So you're journal will update the position for ya!

What a weird quest. Doing his parts is easy. I mean, talk to him, bring him a student, and talk to him twice. Why the heck would he be sitting in a dungeon filled with difficulties? I guess if people aren't worth learning how to be dead they should... die?

Thanks for the quest though, well appreciated!

you can do this easily with enshroud at level 30, no need in group. just pass em.
by anachronox 63 weeks ago
Did quest yesterday, Guide was GREAT! ...only thing is like stated above, mobs seemed a little harder then thier level unless you have a full group 20+....IF you do go kill Kalendra....a bard can solo(lull) pull ALL mobs in her room, even pet....she is a pushover then!

- she droped a +7 wis +13 spell damage ring.
by pugisdead 61 weeks ago
I just did this quest easily solo at lvl 20, invis all the way. I bought sandstone of invisibility and walked up to him.

by alinor 60 weeks ago
Indeed, same here. Easily done with invisibilty carving. Died only once due to early break of invis.
by hexorcist 60 weeks ago
Got hold of Slate carving of invisibility (5 charges x 5 mins).
Walked thru this easy at 24 and used just 2 charges of the slate carving.
The Feign Death itself seems kinda hit and miss in dungeons, getting quite a lot of resists from 4 dot mobs and on success mobs often park up on you and dont walk back to spawn spot.
...
The walkthru here is spot on though and thanks for all the info.
by zagarr 60 weeks ago
Where do u buy the Slate or Sandstone of Invisibility ??
by hexorcist 59 weeks ago
The Invisibilty carvings are player crafted and should be available on Exchange.

RE : feign death bug
A workaround for it when mobs remain over your feigned body is to get up and immediately FD again.
I have found this to fail sometimes but I have adopted a more "extreme" workaround : stand up and fear mob...then FD again.
When the fear breaks the mob will go straight back to spawn point or patrol path. This remedy obviously has environmental restrictions.

Sad Sad news. As of last patch I believe this is not such the case I was going to try it one more time, but been trying this quest with invisibility carving for past 3 days.

Seems Sigil got wise to the invise trick and placed a mob right infront of Kendral who see's through invise.

I was hoping some one just was mean and pulled the agro to the hall way right before kendral but alas does not seem the case.

Just a heads up right before you get to his chamber you will be attacked by one of his guardians which currently owns me with about 3 hits. Does around 300+ damage a hit.

So find a group and save you the exp loss.
by perfecto 59 weeks ago
arghhhhh it took me like 1 hour tog et there with a group of 4 people who all left then i read about the stealth and get run all the waay back to khal and back again then i read it doesnt work anymore screw this quest!!! ile do it at lvl 50 lol
by moon 58 weeks ago
The invisibility method DOES still work. There's no need to go to Kendral's room at all, so an invis-seeing mob there is irrelevant.

My only caution is to watch for the named jailor. If he is up you need to hug the wall opposite him as you pass by. Other than that, it's a breeze to invis your way to some FD goodness. ^_^
by perfecto 58 weeks ago
yay finally convinced my m8 to walk and give me invisibility and it was easy as pie =D
by tausk 58 weeks ago
Did this in 5 minutes last night. Thanks for the tip guys.
by daemien 58 weeks ago
This mission takes about 2-3 minutes after you enter the cavern while invis. Very easy.
by dochan 58 weeks ago
Just completed with Invis and agreed takes only about 2-3 minutes.

Thanks for the great guide!
by soriz 57 weeks ago
Great guide!

Invis works. I did it last night.

The only problem I had was with the direction in which Kalendra's Coven lies. It is EAST. No north about it. As a matter of fact, it appeared on my map ever so slightly south.

Best thing to do is do what Synister said. Get the other quest from the guard standing at the entrance to the bunker. He marks the location on your map. The coven isn't far from the bunker, EAST.

Good luck,
Soriz

Yup friend of mine and I went in and did it just a lil bit ago took us like 3 mins with invis, easy in, easy out, thanks for the detailed instructions on how to get to npc made the quest very very easy :)
by jart 56 weeks ago
Thanks for the guide! aNd thanks for all the usefull tips guys.

I can't wait to hit lvl 20 :)
by boojiboy 56 weeks ago
I'm going to help a necro friend do this quest. However, he's a Goblin. Can anyone confirm whether this quest still needs to be started with a necro trainer. And if so, are the trainers in Lomshir, Khal, and Hathor Zhi the only ones that give it out? I ask, because I think he's KOS to all three of those races.

Thanks.
by jart 56 weeks ago
Done! :)
by cyanide74 54 weeks ago
The gnome trainer in Mekalia also gives the quest, and thanks for the nifty map.
by dufour 53 weeks ago
hi there... i have done "the art of death" quest and i got a new quest at Master Vallerex’ i had to read som words of suffering and so on... done that and the next is kill the dark witch.. but i kant seem to find her??
and by the way non of the above habbent to me that you wrote.. im a necromancer lev. 44 am i to high to get the "Rest of the Dead" spell???
by miccrorob 52 weeks ago
Another easy easy way to do this quest is if you can find a shaman he has invis and can go through the dungeon and get to Master Vallerex and have him summon you and the evac took use 3 or 4 mins thanks for the hints.
by morlore 46 weeks ago
The Necromancer Trainer in Martok also gives this quest. If your a goblin like myself, killing the Coven will improve your faction with "The City of Khal"

by wiking 44 weeks ago
Thanks for a great guide. I got the Q from trainer in Martok. And with invis I did the Q in 5 min :)

by zashadiamons 43 weeks ago
I did the quest a few days ago and it is easily done with the right group. It is well combined with some of the Hunters League quests (which call for killing Failed experiments which are straight down the hall instead of turning right in the first room). With a so and so group you will get owned though, as I have experienced several times. Bad pulls equals lots and lots of mobs. If I only had Feign death!! :-)
by xentax 30 weeks ago
hey buddy, you can also get the quest in Martok, from the goblin necro trainer.
by darricvoyd 26 weeks ago
Just a quick FYI, there are necro pet skeletons that see through invis. I don't know when this was updated, but I tried to do the quest with invis yesterday and had my rear end handed to me when a skeleton saw me. The necros roam through the areas that we have to go through to finish this quest.

After my wife put together a really great group (thanks, Babe!), we headed back down there and easily finished the quest. It went much quicker than expected.

There are a few quests that can be completed in Kalendra's Coven and the XP just from killing mobs is really good, so finding a group was easy, especially on a Saturday night.
by lifebane 26 weeks ago
very true, they did add a couple roaming see invis mobs. They CAN be avoided if it is timed right, but risky. So basically you should ask yourself if you prefer the challenge or just grab a group and go get it done safely you antisocial people you! :P
